MES MICROS TRADE PLAN
Bulls Control Baby — You Never Have to Short ES to Have a Great Week
Posted: Monday May 18, 2026
Yesterday’s MES micro futures trade plan produced a 100-point runner off Battle Plan 1 — and this morning, the only question worth asking is how long you’re still holding it. Today is the day before OPEX, no new battle plan trades are mapped, and the Jesse Livermore quote in last night’s write-up says it all: there’s a time to go long, a time to go short, and a time to go fishing. This AM briefing covers what bulls control actually means for your trading decisions, how to manage a runner when price is knocking on the expected range, and why the smartest ES futures trade plan today might be no trade at all. Bulls control. Pack your fishing poles… but keep your eyes on the levels.
Yesterday’s Battle Plan Review: The 100-Point Runner
Battle Plan 1 was the only setup that mattered yesterday — and it was a monster. Price pulled back cleanly into the battle plan zone and gave a textbook long entry. If you held a runner into the overnight session, you’re sitting on 100 points this morning. The system worked exactly as designed.
For the instructor, it was two swings and two misses. The first attempt touched price but needed one more tick to fill. The second attempt at the Strong Level reclaim required a front-run he wasn’t willing to give it. The market ran over 100 points without him. That’s trading — and you report the truth and move on.
- The Setup: Battle Plan 1 long zone — a clean pullback into the level, confirming long entry for anyone who got filled.
- The Runner: Anyone holding a single lotto runner through the overnight session is sitting on a 100-point gain. At least one battle plan trade per week reaches 100 points — this was it for the week.
- The Miss: Entry touched price by a single tick and didn’t fill. A second attempt at the Strong Level reclaim required a front-run that wasn’t given. Two swings, two misses.
- Re-Entry Option: If you needed to get out before the close — prop account, risk rules, preference — no big deal. You could re-enter. The long was still valid.
Trader Lesson 1
When you miss an entry, continue to mental-trade it as if you were in the position. Ask yourself: where would my stop be right now? Where would I be taking profit? Where would I add? Those mental reps build the same decision-making muscle as live trades — and they cost nothing.
Trader Lesson 2
At least one battle plan trade per week reaches 100 points. Have a plan for your runner before the session opens — not in the heat of the moment. Know the target, know the stop, know the exit. Play perfect chess.
Bulls Control: Stop Fighting the Market and Start Trading With It
Bad economic news. Buffett says he doesn’t understand this market. And yet ES futures key levels keep breaking to the upside. When bulls control, the job isn’t to predict the reversal. The job is to trade with who controls — and wait for your levels. A nearby stream was flooded with short calls all session. Meanwhile, the Battle Plan was focused on one long in the right place. The contrast speaks for itself.
- Bulls Control Definition: Price is above previous day high, all major instruments are above VWAP, and overnight inventory is net long. In this condition, shorts are counter-trend — they carry a low win rate and require ruthless risk management.
- Laddering Up: Each session, bulls add to a sequential staircase of higher highs and higher lows. That ladder continues until a break level is violated with conviction — not just touched.
- Macro vs. Day Trading: Macro conditions don’t determine your S&P 500 futures pre-market analysis or your daily setups. “We trade what happens — not what I want to happen, not what the macro picture is telling us.”
- The Short Trap: When bulls control, the market traps short sellers with fakeout drops, rapid reclaims, and aggressive VWAP bounces. That’s the nature of a bull market. The trap is designed for you.
- When Shorts Are Valid: Shorting when bulls control requires two things: a tolerance for a low win rate AND ruthless risk management. No wide stops. If it goes against you even slightly, you’re done. If you can’t commit to both of those conditions, wait for a battle plan long.
Trader Lesson 3
You never have to short ES to make your points in a week. Even in down weeks, monster short-covering rallies produce clean long opportunities. If shorting when bulls control costs you mental equity, discipline, or account equity — just don’t do it. The battle plan longs will come.
Day Before OPEX: Pack Your Fishing Poles
Today is the day before options expiration — and tomorrow is OPEX Friday, a red trading day rated Level 10. The battle plan indicator was not updated. The Jesse Livermore quote in last night’s write-up covered it: there’s a time to go long, a time to go short, and a time to go fishing. No new battle plan trades are mapped. If untested battle plan levels get tested with a nice vomit… those will be traded accordingly. But for now — fishing poles out.
Here’s what’s on the radar this week and next:
| Date | Event | Significance |
|---|---|---|
| Today | Day Before OPEX | Reduced trade plan — patience is the strategy |
| Tomorrow | Options Expiration (OPEX) Friday | Red trading day — Level 10. What does your trade plan say? |
| Next Week | FOMC Minutes | Likely low impact in current environment — watch it anyway |
| Next Week | Unemployment / Sentiment / Expectations | Multiple data releases — mark your calendar now |
Trader Lesson 4
Mark OPEX and the day before OPEX as special days in your journal. Track your performance on these sessions separately from regular trading days. Over time, that data tells you whether these sessions are worth trading at full size — or whether you should genuinely be fishing.
Multi-Instrument Analysis: Reading ES, NQ, and Dow Together
One instrument alone doesn’t tell the full story. When all three major futures — ES, NQ, and Dow — are above previous day high and above VWAP, that’s confirmation. Session stacking. In this morning’s session, ES has been the leader. NQ pushed into the upper distribution of its overnight range. Dow was the laggard, battling its VWAP for stretches — but even there, price kept finding its bounce level and pushing back up. All above. Bulls control.
- ES (E-mini S&P 500 Futures): The leader this session. Made an all-time high during RTH. Above VWAP, above opening. Bulls control with no argument.
- NQ (Nasdaq Micro Futures): Above VWAP and previous day high. Pushed into upper distribution of overnight range. Did not yet grab its all-time high during RTH — that would be the cleanest confirmation for a reversal setup later.
- Dow (YM Futures): The laggard. Kept battling VWAP. Below its London high at points. But still above previous day high — still bullish. One lagging instrument creates mud, not a bear case.
- All-Time High Rule: All-time highs made in the overnight session are less meaningful for reversal setups than those made during RTH. If you’re looking for a high-conviction short entry, wait for the all-time high to print during Regular Trading Hours — that’s when the real players are in the room.
Trader Lesson 5
When checking multiple instruments, look for agreement — not just one outlier. If ES, NQ, and Dow are all above previous day high, that’s a unified bulls-control signal. If one is lagging, note it and reduce your confidence level. If two or three are rolling over break levels together, that’s when the narrative starts to shift.
Discipline, Perfect Chess, and the Heart-Rate Test
The personal goal for the week was perfect discipline — not most points, not most trades. Perfect discipline. This session had plenty of moments to test it: a setup that felt toppy, an order sitting at the expected range that never filled, and the pull of wanting to short while bulls control. Every one of those moments was managed by the rules. That’s trading psychology done right in the context of ES futures discipline.
- Perfect Chess: Playing every position as if you’re still in it — full discipline, no emotion, no desperation. If you missed your entry, you mental-trade it anyway. If you’re up 100 points on a runner, you manage it like a fresh trade. Perfect chess means every decision is made on rules, not feelings.
- The Heart-Rate Test: If your heart is racing, that is a sign to step back — not step forward. Elevated emotion is not a trading signal. It is a warning.
- Clock Awareness: Before every entry, check the clock. Avoid entries right at the top and bottom of the hour unless the location is exceptionally strong. It’s a simple filter that eliminates a lot of bad trades.
- The Jenga Principle: Where are the holes in your preparation? Where are you shortcutting your pre-flight? Your trade plan review? Your entry criteria? Taking shortcuts looks like pulling the wrong Jenga piece. Building with patience looks like a tower that holds.
- “Feels Toppy” Is Not a Trade: Price felt toppy all session. That feeling never produced a tradeable setup. Feelings aren’t signals. Levels are signals. Rules are signals. Feelings are noise.
Trader Lesson 6
If your heart is racing, that is a sign to step back — not step forward. Elevated emotion is the market’s way of trapping undisciplined traders. Recognize the feeling, write it in your journal, and close the DOM if you have to. Protecting your mental equity is protecting your account equity.
“You never have to short ES to make your points in a week. Even when we’re having down weeks, we have monster short-covering rallies. You just don’t have to be short.”
COMMON QUESTIONS FOR ES FUTURES TRADERS
What does “Bulls control. Shorts are counter. Small, if at all.” mean?
A: This is Micros Trader’s core directional rule. When bulls control — meaning price is above previous day high, above VWAP, and the overnight inventory is net long — the dominant force in the market is buyers. Shorting into that environment means trading against who controls. These trades carry a low win rate. “Small, if at all” is the sizing instruction: if you take a counter-trend short, size it down dramatically, know exactly where you’re wrong, and exit fast if it goes against you. Most of the time, the right answer is to not short at all and wait for a battle plan long.
What is OPEX, and why does it change how you trade?
A: OPEX stands for Options Expiration — the day each month (typically the third Friday) when listed options contracts expire. Large amounts of options positions are closed, rolled, or settled on this day, which creates unusual volume, volatility, and price behavior that doesn’t follow normal technical patterns. Micros Trader rates OPEX Friday a red trading day at Level 10, meaning maximum caution. The day before OPEX also warrants reduced activity. Traders should mark both days in their journal as special sessions and review their performance on these days separately to see whether they should trade at reduced size or not at all.
What is a “lotto runner” and how do you manage one?
A: A lotto runner is a speculative, extended runner trade — a contract you leave on after taking your primary profits, with the goal of capturing a larger move if price keeps going. In Micros Trader’s Three-Contract System, you take profits on your first and second contracts at defined targets, then let the third run as far as price will carry it. Managing a runner means knowing your stop (in this session, below 96), knowing your target (the expected range, the green box), and having a plan for overnight holds if your account allows it. A lotto runner that reaches 100 points is not unusual — at least one battle plan trade per week gets there.
What does “playing perfect chess” mean in trading?
A: Perfect chess means executing every position exactly according to your rules — no emotional overrides, no revenge trades, no size-ups after a loss. It applies even when you miss an entry: you continue to mental-trade the setup as if you were in it, tracking where your stop would be and where you’d take profit. The goal is to build disciplined decision-making through reps, whether or not real money is involved. A trader playing perfect chess makes the same decision at the end of a bad week as at the end of a good one — because the rules don’t change based on how you feel.
Why are all-time highs made in overnight hours less useful for shorting than RTH all-time highs?
A: Regular Trading Hours (RTH, 9:30 AM – 4:00 PM ET) are when institutional volume, market makers, and the largest participants are active. An all-time high printed during RTH carries the weight of full market participation — it’s a meaningful reference point for a reversal setup. An all-time high made overnight in extended hours (ETH) is set with thinner volume and fewer participants, making it a weaker reference for a high-conviction short. If you’re looking to short an all-time high, wait for one printed during RTH for the cleanest signal.
What is the Initial Balance (IB), and why does it matter?
A: The Initial Balance is the price range established during the first hour of Regular Trading Hours (9:30–10:30 AM ET). It sets a reference zone for the rest of the session — IB High and IB Low are key break levels. Price breaking above IB High suggests buyers are in control and extending range. Price breaking below IB Low suggests sellers are taking over. Many battle plan setups are designed around what happens at these levels. Watching IB High and IB Low is a standard session habit for ES futures traders.
What does “laddering up” mean?
A: Laddering up is the sequential process of bulls building higher highs and higher lows across sessions — each day’s low being above the previous day’s low, and each day’s high breaking above the previous day’s high. When this pattern is intact, bulls are in control of the macro structure. Each bullish battle plan setup gets added to the ladder. The ladder only breaks when a meaningful break level is violated with conviction — not just touched, but broken and held below.
What is a “fair value gap” (FVG) in ES futures?
A: A fair value gap is a price imbalance created when two non-overlapping candles leave a gap between them — a range of prices that were skipped over during a fast move. These gaps act as magnets: price often returns to fill or test them before continuing its trend. During this session, the market repeatedly tried to leave fair value gaps to the upside but kept returning to fill them — a sign of controlled, cautious buying rather than explosive momentum. When price cannot leave a fair value gap open, it suggests the move is struggling to sustain itself.
Why does the clock matter before entering a trade?
A: Price action around the top and bottom of each hour tends to be distorted — algorithms and institutional players often execute orders on the hour, creating false moves, stop runs, and whipsaw candles. Entering a trade right at :00 or :30 puts you at risk of getting stopped out by this mechanical order flow. Micros Trader’s standard practice is to check the clock before every entry — if it’s within a few minutes of the top or bottom of the hour, the location needs to be exceptionally strong to justify the risk. Otherwise, wait for the move to settle.
