MES MICROS TRADE PLAN

Stop Trading Your Opinion — Start Trading the Market

Posted: Monday May 4, 2026

☀️ AM BRIEFING

Monday’s ES futures morning briefing opened with a direct challenge for May: demand from yourself that you execute the basics perfectly. Pre-flight, trade plan, preparation — no more squeezing it in last minute. A flat VWAP and price pinned at Friday’s close all session long drove the point home. Then the Lunch & Learn delivered one of the most powerful trading psychology lessons in recent memory — a story about a trader who lost not because his analysis was wrong, but because he was trading his opinion instead of the market. Between the MES micro futures trade plan review and the psychology session, this AM Briefing is one to save.

May Fresh Start — The Pre-Flight Challenge

It is a new month. May has arrived. And Micros Trader is throwing down a direct challenge: demand from yourself that you execute the basics perfectly. Not sort of. Not when you feel like it. Perfectly. The place to start? Your pre-flight.

  • Written trade plan: If you do not have one, that is your first task. You cannot properly prepare for a session without a written plan to prepare from.
  • Know your best time: When is your brain sharpest? 3 AM? 11 PM? Do your prep then — not whenever you have a spare ten minutes before the open.
  • Are you squeezing it in? Be honest. Are you rushing your pre-flight with half a brain, telling yourself you will wing it? That is the definition of arriving ill-prepared.
  • Mark all your levels before the open: Every level on the chart. Before you even consider entering a trade.
  • Listen to the review section daily: The audio read-along is there. Press play. Before you are allowed to enter a trade, show up thoroughly prepared.

Preparation is not a formality — it is your edge. In twenty minutes you can be completely ready. There is no excuse.

Trader Lesson 1

Your pre-flight is non-negotiable. If you are squeezing it in last minute with half a brain, you are trading ill-prepared — and you know it. Carve out twenty focused minutes before each session. Mark your levels, review the Battle Plan, confirm your bias before the first candle prints.

Market Conditions — Key Levels & Weekly Bias

Friday’s session ended with a weak close after a 50-point liquidation break. Monday gapped up — not down as expected — and bulls reclaimed the full move by mid-session. Here is the level structure heading into the week for ES futures daily trade setups.

LevelPriceSignificance
Top of Strong Range71.90Most important level for the week — bears must get under this to flip bias
Multi-Day POC7162Price magnet — expect this to become a happy place on any pullback
Value Area Low (17-day)71.16Lower reference — potential target if price breaks down
Value Area HighLines up with top of Strong RangeDual confluence — strong resistance zone
Lower Battle Plan Target7077Secondary target if price breaks under 71.90
DateEventSignificance
Mon May 4Factory Orders, Fed SpeakLight news day — volatility wildcard is Straits of Hormuz headlines
Tue May 5JOLTS (2 red folders, 30 min after open)Potential volatility catalyst — be positioned and prepared before release
Fri May 8Non-Farm PayrollMajor weekly anchor event — expect elevated volatility

Expected weekly range: approximately 100 points (implied move ~98). Micros Trader notes it feels a little light given the Straits of Hormuz news and last week’s historic north move. Was Friday’s 50-point liquidation break THE pullback? It very well could have been — price bounced twice off the Strong Level and gapped up Monday morning. Bulls control.

Trader Lesson 2

A big red candle does not automatically confirm a downtrend. Friday’s 50-point liquidation break looked ominous… but bulls bought every tick back by Monday morning. Wait for the market to confirm a new directional bias before committing — one candle is not a trend change.

The Mixed 4-Pack — When Not to Force It

One of the most reliable filters for trade quality is the 4-pack. When all four major index futures — ES, NQ, Dow, and Russell — are aligned, follow-through probability goes up. When they are split, you are trading into a headwind. Monday’s session was a textbook mixed 4-pack all morning.

IndexPosition at OpenSession Behavior
ES (S&P 500)Under previous day lowReclaimed range, took IB high, bulls in control
NQ (Nasdaq)Upper distribution — above halfbackStrength made any short setup unreliable — NQ not cooperating with down
DowUnder previous day low, laggingWeakest index — limited upside follow-through for ES
RussellUpper distributionMade a run toward all-time high during the session
“I would really want to see NQ participate before I would actually be entering that short. NQ’s probably going to bounce, and that short will be a loser.” — Micros Trader

Four indices in four different quadrants. The market is speaking — it is telling you follow-through probability is low. Monday is already the lowest probability trading day of the week for most traders. A mixed 4-pack on top of that is a double signal to reduce size, tighten your criteria, or stand aside entirely.

Trader Lesson 3

Before entering any directional ES trade, check the 4-pack. If NQ is not moving in the same direction — especially for a short — your probability drops significantly. The indices must be on the same train for follow-through to be reliable. Mixed 4-pack means mixed results. Adjust size accordingly.

No Level, No Trade — The Opening Rule

Monday’s opening was textbook no-man’s land. Price pinned at Friday’s close, the previous day close, and VWAP — all stacked. The VWAP was the flattest of the year. There was nothing to do. And that is exactly the point of this rule.

  • No level, no trade: If price is not at a defined Battle Plan level, there is no entry. Period. Prediction trading from the middle of nowhere is how accounts get ground down tick by tick.
  • 10-point range in the first 10 minutes: No edge. No setup. No trade. Just wait.
  • Make price come to you: The level was mapped before the open. Wait for price to arrive — then engage. Not before.
  • DOM management: When there is nothing to do, Micros Trader closes his DOM entirely. If the DOM is open, you will be tempted. Remove the temptation.

Friday’s session proved the model exactly: waited for price to reach the defined level, took the short, it paid well. That is S&P 500 futures pre-market analysis in action — the patience to wait for the setup, then execute.

Trader Lesson 4

When price is in no-man’s land — no Battle Plan level, mixed indices, flat VWAP — the right trade is no trade. Close the DOM if you have to. The next high-probability setup is around the corner. Your only job is to wait for it.

ChartBuddy Updates — Faster Journaling, Cleaner Reviews

Micros Trader rolled out several new ChartBuddy features this session — all aimed at making chart markup faster and session reviews more structured. The principles here apply to any charting platform.

  • New sticker pop-up panel: Add drawings, arrows, and trade symbols directly to your chart without opening the journal — one click from the pin icon. Battle Plan trade markers, Speculator Specials, partials, take profits, and more are all available instantly.
  • Day-of-week Object Tree folder: Set your drawings to auto-sort into the current day of the week. Every mark you make lands in the Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday folder automatically — weekend reviews become effortlessly clean.
  • Customizable pre-flight checklist: The pre-flight indicator now supports a custom checklist of up to ten items — your own criteria, your own language. Stays visible on your chart as a reminder before you touch the DOM.
  • Customizable entry checklist: The essentials indicator now has an entry checklist module — fully editable header, footer, and checkmark items. If you are newer to the system or drilling your entry criteria, keep this on screen.
  • Coming soon — Missed Entry sticker: A community suggestion from the session. A sticker to mark trades that came within a few ticks of a level but never triggered — valuable for post-session review and pattern recognition.

Trader Lesson 5

Mark up your charts in real time. Use stickers and arrows to document entries, exits, partials, and missed entries as they happen. At the end of the session, screenshot and drop it in your journal. Over time those annotated charts reveal patterns no spreadsheet can show you.

Trading Psychology — Stop Trading Your Opinion

The Lunch & Learn dove into one of the most common — and most expensive — mistakes in futures trading psychology: treating the market like a debate where your job is to prove you are right. Your job is not to be right. Your job is to make money.

The Value Trading Trap

When a market falls, the human mind sees a bargain. It triggers the same impulse as finding something on sale at the grocery store. But financial markets have no bargains. None.

  • Buying a falling market because it seems cheap is impulse trading dressed up as analysis.
  • If the trade works, you have rewarded the wrong behavior — your brain learns that knife-catching leads to profit. That pattern eventually destroys accounts.
  • Trends persist. The market has inertia. Whatever price is doing now, the odds above 50% say it continues to do that.
  • The perverseness of markets: It often makes more sense to buy something because it is more expensive today than yesterday — not cheaper.
“The fewer impulse trades I had, the more money I made, and the more satisfaction I derived from my job.” — James Paul

The Dr. David Paul Story

Dr. David Paul — PhD in mechanical engineering, founder of a mining company, creator of sophisticated stock selection software — was holding a large long position that was going against him. His software said up. His broker said up. His friends and their Elliott wave counts said up. The market? Going down.

Then his wife walked into the office and said: “It is going down right now, is it not?”

That simple, objective observation hit him like a thunderbolt. He was not trading the market. He was trading his opinion.

  • He closed the long immediately.
  • He reversed to short.
  • The market continued lower and lower.
  • His trading changed forever — from losing trader to winning trader.

The lesson: the market does not care about your analysis, your software, or how much conviction you have. It only knows what price is doing right here, right now. Empty the cup. Trade that.

Trader Lesson 6

When a trade goes against you, ask one question: what is price doing right now? Not what should it be doing. Not what your analysis says. What IS it doing right here, right now. If the market disagrees with your position, get out. You can always re-enter. You cannot always recover from a blown account.

Trader Lesson 7

After the session ends, plot your trades on the chart and count the impulse entries — the ones with no defined level, no Battle Plan setup, no real reason. How many of your entries were impulse trades? Eliminating them one by one is one of the most reliable paths to consistent profitability.

“I wasn’t trading the market. I was trading my opinion.”

❓ FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

COMMON QUESTIONS FOR ES FUTURES TRADERS

What is a pre-flight checklist and why does it matter for futures trading?

A: A pre-flight checklist is a written, structured routine completed before every trading session — marking key levels on the chart, reviewing the Battle Plan, checking the economic calendar, and confirming your directional bias. Without it, you enter the session reacting instead of executing a plan. Micros Trader’s May challenge: demand from yourself that you complete it perfectly every day, at your sharpest time of day, before you touch the DOM.

What does “bulls control, shorts are counter, small if at all” mean?

A: This is Micros Trader’s core session bias declaration. “Bulls control” means the dominant structure favors long-side continuation — bulls are in the driver’s seat. “Shorts are counter” means any short trade goes against the primary bias and carries higher risk. “Small if at all” means if you trade counter-trend, reduce your size significantly. It is not a prohibition on shorting — it is a reminder to respect the bias and size accordingly.

What is the mixed 4-pack and how does it affect trade probability?

A: The 4-pack refers to the four major US equity index futures: ES (S&P 500), NQ (Nasdaq), Dow, and Russell. When all four trend in the same direction, follow-through probability is high — the market is on the same train. When they are split across different positions relative to prior session levels, it is a mixed 4-pack. This signals reduced follow-through and is a reason to reduce size, tighten targets, or stand aside entirely.

What is a liquidation break in ES futures trading?

A: A liquidation break is a sharp, fast flush move that triggers cascading stop-loss orders as leveraged traders are forced out of positions. It is characterized by large, high-velocity candles — often fifteen to twenty-plus points in minutes. Friday’s session produced a 50-point liquidation break that was fully reclaimed by Monday morning. Key lesson: these moves can look catastrophic but are frequently bought aggressively. Do not assume a liquidation break confirms a trend change until price confirms it.

What is the Initial Balance (IB) in futures trading?

A: The Initial Balance is the price range established during the first hour of Regular Trading Hours — 9:30 to 10:30 AM ET. The IB high and IB low serve as key reference levels for the rest of the session. Taking out the IB high is a bullish signal suggesting price may explore higher. Many traders watch for ES to extend beyond one IB extreme and then reverse to test the other — Micros Trader noted that ES has an “uncanny ability” to grab the opposite IB.

What does “no level, no trade” mean in practice?

A: It means you must have a specific, predefined price level — from the Battle Plan, VWAP, IB high or low, value area, or Strong Level — before you consider entering a trade. Trading from the middle of the range with no clear reference point is prediction trading. You are guessing, not executing a plan. If price is not at a defined level, the right move is to wait and let price come to you.

What is a lotto runner and how is it managed?

A: A lotto runner is a speculative contract held well beyond a standard profit target — typically after the first two contracts in Micros Trader’s 3-contract system have been closed for profit. The runner is moved to break-even so there is no risk remaining, then left to work with no emotional attachment to the outcome. During Monday’s session, Micros Trader held a short runner from a prior session, up 50 points with a break-even stop, targeting a potential larger move lower.

What is impulse trading and how do you eliminate it?

A: Impulse trading is entering a position based on a gut reaction or a sense that the market looks “cheap” or “expensive” — rather than a defined Battle Plan setup at a specific level. The Lunch & Learn cited a trader who reviewed his charts and found 8 out of 10 trades were impulse entries. The fix: after each session, plot your trades on the chart and honestly assess which ones had a real reason behind them. Eliminating impulse trades is one of the most direct paths to improved profitability.

How is VWAP used as a reference level in ES futures?

A: VWAP — Volume Weighted Average Price — represents the average price paid by all participants weighted by volume for the session. It acts as a dynamic equilibrium level that price tends to gravitate toward. A flat VWAP signals a balanced, low-conviction session where neither side has control. When price holds above VWAP and bounces from a retest, it can offer a defined long entry with a clear stop level below — a setup Micros Trader referenced multiple times during Monday’s opening.
