Free Trades and Fast Candles: Managing Risk in a Squirrelly Monday Session

Posted: Monday May 18, 2026

☀️ AM BRIEFING

Monday’s MES micro futures trade plan session opened with an 80-point overnight range that had already done most of the work before RTH even started. George walked through Battle Plan 2’s dual setup — a long and a short, both buried in the written notes — with both sides hitting their targets overnight. The RTH session delivered squirrelly, insta-candle price action: two 15-point candles on a 3-minute chart, back-and-forth battles at the opening price, and fast DOM movement that kept discipline-first traders on the right side. George executed three live trades for a combined 30+ points — and the Lunch and Learn delivered a deep read on why 90% of traders fail, tracing every self-destructive behavior back to one root cause: pain avoidance.

Battle Plan 2 Review — Long and Short, Both Hit

Battle Plan 2 from the prior night included two ideas: a mapped long from the drop zone targeting the Strong Level, and an unmapped short opportunity buried in the written notes. Both played out overnight. The long bounced 7–8 points off the drop zone and climbed to target. The short — if you read the notes — gave a possible 30-point move once the Bull Bear Strong Level was lost. Neither trade would have been visible to anyone who only looked at the chart.

  • Long Setup: Price dropped into the drop zone, bounced 7–8 points, reclaimed the Strong Level, and made it to the Battle Plan 2 target. Scott grabbed the insta-candle reclaim and took the full trade to target.
  • Short Setup (notes only): George wrote explicitly in the notes that losing the Bull Bear Strong Level could represent a possible short opportunity. He didn’t map it because he doesn’t like chasing shorts — but it was there in writing for anyone who does.
  • Battle Plan 2 exhausted: With both sides paying, Battle Plan 2 was removed from the chart going into RTH to keep the view clean.

Trader Lesson 1

Read every word of the Battle Plan notes — not just the chart. Some setups are written only in the text. If it’s in the notes, it’s a valid trade idea whether it appears on the chart or not.

Insta-Candle Warning — When the Chart Bleeds

Monday’s session was defined by insta-candles — sudden, sharp moves with no setup. The London session ran an 80-point range before RTH even opened. Once RTH started, two 15-point candles printed on the 3-minute chart within the first 25 minutes. George called it “blood on the chart.” This is a recognized warning signal with a specific rule attached — one that applies to ES futures daily trade setups as much as any market condition.

  • The 15-Point Candle Rule: When two 15-point candles appear on the 3-minute chart, that is a stand-down signal. Treat it as a high-risk environment. Wait for price to settle and deliver two more clear, orderly bounces before considering an entry.
  • London session context: A 68–80 point London range before RTH is abnormally large. When that much range is consumed overnight, RTH often chops or delivers insta-candles rather than clean trends.
  • DOM warning: Fast, feverish DOM movement is a secondary indicator of danger. If the order book is moving too quickly to read clearly, the environment is not clean for most traders.
  • Monday amplifier: Monday sessions carry baseline unpredictability on their own. Insta-candles on a Monday compound that risk further.
Two 15-point candles on the 3-minute chart means you’re in a high-risk environment. You don’t have to trade it. Close your platform. Wait for something new.

Trader Lesson 2

The 15-Point Candle Rule is a stand-down signal, not a trade signal. Two 15-point candles on the 3-minute chart means the environment has turned dangerous. Sit on your hands until price settles and gives you two clean, orderly bounces.

The Opening Price — Your Intraday Bull Bear Line

One of the clearest frameworks George applies during RTH is treating the opening price as the session’s bull-bear line. Above it, bulls are in control and longs are with the trend. Below it, conditions lean short — but with the weekly bias firmly bullish, shorts remain counter trades. Monday’s session delivered a textbook example of this level doing its job, with price testing it repeatedly for over an hour.

  • Opening as support/resistance: Every time price held the opening level, bulls remained in control. Every time it lost it, the short side got its moment. The level acted as a gravitational anchor for the entire morning session.
  • Back and forth = indecision: When price trades back and forth through the opening price without conviction, that signals market indecision. It is not a trade setup — it’s a wait signal.
  • Weekly Bull Bear Line: George identified a specific Strong Level as the bull-bear line for the week. Price stayed above it all session, keeping the weekly bias bullish. Bulls control. Shorts are counter. Small, if at all. Never making things worse.
  • Reclaim and loss logic: When price loses the opening and reclaims it with conviction — that’s a potential long trigger. When it loses the opening with a fair-value gap candle — that’s a potential short trigger.

Trader Lesson 3

Mark the RTH opening price on your chart every day — it acts as your intraday bull-bear line. Reclaims with conviction favor longs. Fair-value gap losses favor shorts. Back-and-forth indecision through it means wait for a clean setup.

George’s Three Live Trades — Entry, Stop, and Exit

George executed three trades in the RTH session and finished the morning with 30+ points. He walked through each one live — entry rationale, stop placement, and why he took profit where he did. The pattern across all three: tight stops, defined risk, no hesitation when the setup appeared.

  • Trade 1 — Short at the Battle Plan 2 Target (20 points): Price reached the Strong Level identified overnight as the Battle Plan 2 target. George went short, moved his stop to break even once it moved in his direction, then locked a 20-point profit.
  • Trade 2 — Long off the Opening Reclaim (10 points): When price reclaimed the opening with momentum, George went long targeting the London High — entering with a 4-point stop, using his morning cushion as protection. Price pushed through the Strong Level and he locked a 10-point profit, noting that with one contract in a squirrelly environment, you take the gift when it’s given.
  • Trade 3 — Short off the IB Opening Loss (break even): At the IB turnover, price ripped through the opening price with a fair-value gap candle. George went short with a 3-point stop and immediately moved to break even once it moved in his direction. It ran toward the target before being stopped out flat — the clean result of a well-managed trade that didn’t go full distance.

Trader Lesson 4

Once a trade moves in your direction, move your stop to break even as soon as it’s reasonable. That converts it to a free trade — worst case, you get out flat. Your risk is already predefined and accepted. Now the trade can run without pressure.

Risk Management in Volatile Sessions — Green Over Greed

Monday’s insta-candle environment demanded a specific approach to risk management — different from a clean trending day. George repeated several core rules throughout the session for trading ES futures in high-volatility, fast-moving conditions.

  • Green Over Greed: If you’re up 10 or more points, ask yourself honestly: do you need another trade? In a squirrelly environment, the answer is almost always no. One more trade risks giving back what you’ve earned.
  • See Money, Take Money: In a volatile session with one contract, when the market hands you a 10–20 point gift, take it. Don’t hold for a bigger move that may never come. The three-contract system is designed for runners — one contract is not.
  • Close Your Platform: Once your trade is set with a defined stop, close your platform. You don’t need to watch it. It doesn’t need your help. The work is done — watching only invites emotional interference.
  • Wait for Battle Plan Locations: When the session turns volatile, the answer is always the same — wait for price to reach a Battle Plan trade location before engaging again. Monday’s Battle Plan 3, roughly 60 points below the RTH open, was identified as the next meaningful engagement point.

Trader Lesson 5

Green Over Greed is a decision framework, not just a phrase. If you’re green, the question isn’t “what’s my next trade?” — it’s “do I even need one?” Most days, if you’ve hit your number, walking away is the highest-percentage move available.

Trading Psychology — Why 90% of Traders Fail (It’s Not Strategy)

The Lunch and Learn delivered an extended reading on futures trading psychology — the kind of material that sounds theoretical until you’ve sat in a losing trade and refused to close it. The argument is direct: every self-destructive behavior traders engage in — running losses, cutting winners early, doubling down, revenge trading — traces back to one subconscious driver. Avoiding pain.

  • Why you hold losing trades: You tell yourself it’s because of an indicator or a support level. The real reason is to avoid the pain of being wrong. As long as the position is open, hope exists. The moment you close it, the pain becomes real.
  • Why you cut winners early: You tell yourself “you can’t go broke taking a profit.” The real reason is to lock in relief before the market takes it away. You’re not trading from opportunity — you’re trading from fear of future pain.
  • The double-down trap: Increasing your size during a losing streak to “get back to even” isn’t risk management. It’s an attempt to eliminate existing pain. That’s when trading becomes genuinely dangerous.
  • The winning streak paradox: Most traders reduce their size when things go well, afraid of losing their gains. As S&P pit trader Greg Dariba said: “When they win, they start betting less. Bet more.”
  • Cognitive dissonance: When your first impulse on a chart is to enter, and then fear immediately counters it — that’s cognitive dissonance. You’re arguing with yourself. The answer isn’t to push through. It’s to reset: meditate, sleep, eat, walk.
  • Two root causes: When George experiences this state, he traces it to one of two things — trading fatigue or insufficient preparation. As the reading put it: “Fatigue makes cowards of us all.”
“If you are taking your profits early under the excuse that you can’t go broke taking a profit, you are reacting to your mind warning you against future pain.”

Trader Lesson 6

The next time you hesitate to close a losing trade, ask honestly: am I holding this because I believe in the trade, or because closing it makes the loss real? That one question — answered honestly — is worth more than any indicator.

“No level, no trade. Period. Make price come to you. No prediction trading.”

❓ FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

COMMON QUESTIONS FOR ES FUTURES TRADERS

What is an “insta-candle” and why is it dangerous for ES futures traders?

A: An insta-candle is a sudden, large price move — typically 8 to 15 or more points — that happens in a single candle with no visible setup or buildup. They are dangerous because they can trigger stops instantly, create unfavorable entries, and make DOM reading impossible. George treats two 15-point candles on the 3-minute chart as a formal stand-down signal for the session.

What does “Bulls control. Shorts are counter. Small, if at all.” mean in practice?

A: This phrase describes the session bias. “Bulls control” means the overall trend favors long trades. “Shorts are counter” means any short trade is going against the primary trend — lower probability, higher risk. “Small, if at all” means if you do take a short, size down significantly and be quick to exit. Never make things worse by adding to a counter trade that goes against you.

What is the Bull Bear Line and how is it used?

A: The Bull Bear Line is a key Strong Level that divides bullish from bearish territory. When price is above it, the bias is bullish — longs are with the trend. When price is below it, the bias shifts bearish — shorts gain probability. George identifies one Bull Bear Line for the week (a weekly bias level) and one for the trading day, typically the RTH opening price. Monitoring both helps traders know whether they are trading with or against the trend.

What is the 15-Point Candle Rule?

A: The 15-Point Candle Rule is a stand-down signal used in the MicrosTrader live room. When two 15-point candles appear on the 3-minute chart during RTH, the environment is considered high-risk and unpredictable. The rule calls for stepping back from new entries and waiting for price action to settle into more orderly, readable movement before engaging again. It is not a trade signal — it is a warning to stop trading.

What is a “free trade” or “risk-free trade”?

A: A free trade is a position where you have moved your stop to break even after the trade moved in your favor. At that point, the worst outcome is getting stopped out flat — you risk nothing. This is a key trade management technique: once the trade is “free,” you can hold for a larger target without the emotional pressure of risking real money. George moved all three of Monday’s trades to break even as soon as conditions allowed.

What does “Green Over Greed” mean?

A: Green Over Greed means prioritizing protecting existing profits over chasing additional gains. If you are already up on the day — especially in a volatile session — the risk of giving back your profits by over-trading is higher than the reward of adding one more trade. It is a daily reminder to know when enough is enough and walk away clean.

What is “See Money, Take Money”?

A: “See Money, Take Money” is a trade management guideline for single-contract traders in fast markets. When the market hands you a clean 10–20 point gift, take it. The three-contract system is designed to allow one contract to run as a runner toward a larger target — but a single contract does not have that structure. Taking what the market gives you, quickly and cleanly, is the correct approach in a squirrelly, insta-candle environment.

Why was the Battle Plan 2 short not mapped on the chart if it was a valid setup?

A: George explained that he does not personally like chasing shorts, so he did not map it visually — but he wrote the setup explicitly in the Battle Plan notes for members who do trade shorts. This is an important lesson: the chart and the notes are both part of the Battle Plan. The chart shows George’s preferred setups; the notes contain additional context, warnings, and alternative scenarios. Reading both gives you the complete picture of every possible trade idea for the session.

What is the pain avoidance cycle in trading psychology?

A: The pain avoidance cycle is the subconscious pattern driving most trader self-sabotage. According to the Lunch and Learn reading, every destructive trading behavior — running losses, cutting winners short, doubling down, trading without conviction — has the same root cause: the trader’s subconscious is trying to avoid or eliminate pain. Recognizing that your trading decisions are being driven by pain avoidance rather than market analysis is the first step toward trading from a place of freedom instead of fear.
