MES MICROS TRADE PLAN
No Sellers, No Panic — Playing Perfect Chess While ES Coils for Its Next Big Move
Posted: Thursday April 23, 2026
Thursday’s ES futures morning briefing delivered a masterclass in patience — and in knowing what not to do. With bulls firmly in control and price hovering in the upper distribution, the session was about reading market structure correctly, staying out of low-probability trade locations, and honoring a pre-defined plan no matter how much it stings. The MES Micros trade plan identified a tight 40-point value area across five consecutive RTH sessions — when a range compresses this much, it’s loading energy. Tonight’s Battle Plan theme: a big move is inbound. The lesson today was simple… trade the edge, not the middle. Wait for price to come to you.
Bulls in Control — Reading the Market Structure
The session opened with a clear directional read: bulls control, shorts are counter, small if at all. Every time ES pushed down, buyers stepped right back in. There were no sellers willing to press the move. That’s not a shorting environment — that’s a patience environment. The question wasn’t whether to short… it was whether to wait for a better trade location or walk away clean.
- Upper Distribution: ES was trading in the upper portion of the developing range — historically not a high-probability long location. With a large sample set, longing up here has proven not to be a winning strategy. That doesn’t mean it can’t work… it means the odds aren’t in your favor.
- No Sellers: Every push down was bought right back. When there are no sellers, you don’t have to be the first one short. Let the market prove it before you trade it.
- Dow Divergence: Dow was not participating — under previous day lows. Tesla, Meta, and Microsoft all in the red while ES and NQ pushed higher. Divergence between assets reduces conviction on the long side.
- The Journalable Long: The opening price, RTH low, and VWAP all converged — three reasons to be long, bulls control. That’s a trade you can defend in your journal. It paid nearly 10 points.
Trader Lesson 1
When bulls are in control and there are no sellers, you don’t have to be the first one short. Let the market prove it. Your job is to wait for the edge — not create one where none exists.
Playing Perfect Chess — Position Management and Platform Discipline
Micros Trader has been holding a short from Friday — nearly a week. Through an 80-point rally, a news-driven spike, and a bull run toward all-time highs, the lotto runner stayed alive. Why? Perfect chess. That means pre-defining your stop, honoring it without emotion, and not exiting just because the market is going against you. The stop was five points above the recent high. Specific. Pre-defined. Not moved.
- Stop Placement: Stop set at 7278 — five points above the swing high. Not ten. Not twenty. Exactly five. That’s the plan. That’s chess.
- Last Week’s Lesson: Micros Trader noted he did not hold his lotto runner well the prior week — and it cost him. That lesson directly informed this week’s discipline. Failure remembered is failure avoided.
- Platform Closed: When not in a trade, the platform is closed. Boredom plus an open platform is not a good combination. You should have to launch your platform to take a trade — not be tempted by a chart that’s already open.
- Emotional Accumulation: When frustration starts to build, that’s the signal to take a break. Not to trade harder. Recognizing the accumulation of emotions before it affects your decisions is one of the most valuable skills in trading.
Trader Lesson 2
Perfect chess means your stop is pre-defined and you honor it — no matter how much it hurts. Moving your stop out of emotion is how lotto runners die. Set it. Commit to it. Let the market decide.
Trader Lesson 3
Close your platform between setups. An open platform plus boredom is a dangerous combination. You should have to launch your platform to take a trade — that moment of friction is a checkpoint that keeps you honest.
The Six-Minute Rule — Why the Open Is Often a Trap
Micros Trader never recommends taking a trade within the first six minutes of the RTH session. This isn’t arbitrary — it’s earned through experience. The first six minutes are characterized by noise, false moves, and institutional probing. The opening range hasn’t established itself. Levels haven’t been tested. Trading the first six minutes has hurt more times than it has helped. That’s the data. Honor it.
- The Rule: No trades within the first six minutes of RTH. If you do take one, it must be very small and at an exceptional trade location with multiple reasons behind it.
- Why It Works: The first six minutes is where institutions test the market, algos hunt stops, and retail traders react emotionally to overnight news. Letting that play out before entering dramatically improves trade quality.
- After the Open: Once the initial range begins forming, you have context. You can see where buyers and sellers are stepping in. That’s when trade location becomes meaningful.
Trader Lesson 4
The first six minutes of RTH are noise. Wait for the dust to settle before looking for entries. If you must trade the open, keep size very small and only do it at a great trade location — never as a reaction to overnight momentum.
Trade Location — The Red Zone and Why It Matters
Today’s session reinforced one of the Battle Plan’s core principles: trade location is everything in ES futures trading. ES was sitting in the upper distribution — what Micros Trader calls the “red zone.” Longing there has proven not to be a winning strategy with a large sample set. That doesn’t mean a long can’t work — it means the odds are stacked against you. The Battle Plan exists precisely to map the higher-probability locations before the session starts.
- The Red Zone: The upper distribution of the current range. Price is extended. Longs carry more risk. Shorts are closer to potential but still counter-trend in a bull environment.
- The Journaling Standard: To take any trade — especially in a borderline location — you need multiple reasons you can clearly articulate. Bulls control. Bouncing off VWAP. Back-testing the opening. Three reasons. If you can’t write it down, don’t take it.
- No Level, No Trade: If price is hovering in the middle — between levels, between structure — there is no edge. Make price come to you. No prediction trading.
Trader Lesson 5
Before taking any trade, ask: can I journal this? If you can’t articulate multiple reasons — level, bias, structure — don’t take it. The journal is your accountability partner. Only trade what you can defend on paper.
The Range Is Coiling — A Big Move Is Inbound
Three consecutive RTH sessions have stacked almost on top of each other. The value area measured across five RTH sessions spans just 40 points: 7130 to 7171. That is extraordinarily tight for ES. When price compresses this much across multiple sessions, it’s loading energy for a directional move. Tonight’s Battle Plan theme: big move is coming. Know your levels above and below — and have a plan for both directions.
| Metric | Value | Significance |
|---|---|---|
| Value Area High | 7171 | Top of 5-session value area |
| Value Area Low | 7130 | Bottom of 5-session value area |
| Range Width | 41 points | Extremely tight — compression signals expansion |
| RTH Sessions Stacked | 3 consecutive | Opens nearly matching prior closes |
Trader Lesson 6
Tight ranges don’t last forever. When multiple RTH sessions stack on top of each other with minimal expansion, a breakout is loading. Know the value area boundaries and have a plan for both directions before it moves.
Week Made — Knowing When You’re Done
With 50+ points booked on the Battle Plan 4 add-on short earlier this week, Micros Trader’s week was made before Thursday even started. At a benchmark of 10 points a day, that one trade covered the full week. Today’s session was about disciplined observation — not forced participation. If you already made your week, your only job is not to give it back.
- 10-Point Benchmark: Ten points a day is a good day. When you’ve hit a week’s worth in a single trade, the risk/reward of continued aggressive trading shifts dramatically.
- Be Content: If you made 50 points on Battle Plan 1 or Battle Plan 2 this week — you can be done. Being content is a skill. It requires overriding the urge to keep going.
- You Only Need a Few a Week: Not a few an hour. Overtrading chips away at a great week. Identify the best setups, execute them well, and protect the profit.
- Trading Requires the Best of You: When frustration builds and focus fades, that’s the signal to close the platform and step away. Don’t trade when you’re not at your best.
Trader Lesson 7
You only need a few good trades a week — not a few an hour. Once your week is made, your job shifts from growing the account to protecting it. Be content. Close the platform. Walk away.
“I am just the navigator. I don’t have the stick. I don’t have the throttle. All I can do is point out what the radar is telling me. But at the end of the day — you are the pilot of your aircraft.”
COMMON QUESTIONS FOR ES FUTURES TRADERS
What does “bulls control, shorts are counter” mean?
A: When Micros Trader says “bulls control,” it means the dominant directional bias for that session is bullish. Shorts are considered counter-trend trades — they go against the primary flow and carry higher risk. “Small if at all” means if you insist on shorting, keep size very small. It’s not a call to be long everywhere — it’s a reminder that the path of least resistance is up, and trading against it requires extra caution and a great trade location.
What is the “Red Zone” in ES futures trading?
A: The Red Zone refers to the upper distribution of the current range — the area where price has been rejected before and where longs statistically carry lower odds. It doesn’t mean a long can’t work, but with a large sample set it has proven to be a lower-probability location. The Battle Plan identifies these zones in advance so traders know where to be aggressive and where to be patient.
What is the Six-Minute Rule?
A: The Six-Minute Rule states that you should never take a trade within the first six minutes of the Regular Trading Hours (RTH) session, which opens at 9:30 AM ET. The first six minutes are characterized by noise, false breakouts, and stop hunting. If you do trade the open, it must be a very small position at an exceptional trade location. This rule comes from personal experience — trading the open has historically hurt more than it has helped.
What does “playing perfect chess” mean in futures trading?
A: Playing perfect chess means executing your pre-defined trade plan with full discipline — especially around stop placement. You set your stop at the logical level before the trade begins and honor it without emotional interference. Today’s example: a stop placed five points above the recent swing high, held through a multi-day rally. Perfect chess doesn’t guarantee profit — it guarantees you followed the plan correctly regardless of outcome.
What is the Value Area High and Low, and why does it matter?
A: The Value Area High (VAH) and Value Area Low (VAL) represent the price range where approximately 70% of the previous session’s volume was traded. These levels act as significant support and resistance zones. In today’s session, the VAH across five recent RTH sessions was 7171 and the VAL was 7130 — just a 40-point spread. When the value area is this tight across multiple sessions, it signals compression and a potential breakout move is building.
What is a lotto runner and how should it be managed?
A: A lotto runner is a single contract held beyond the normal profit target — a speculative runner you let ride for an outsized move. The key to managing it: set your stop at a logical level and leave it alone. The biggest mistake traders make with lotto runners is exiting too early or moving the stop out of emotion. Micros Trader held a short lotto runner from Friday through multiple adverse moves by keeping the stop fixed five points above the swing high — honoring the plan no matter the pain.
What does “no level, no trade” mean?
A: “No level, no trade” is a core Battle Plan principle. Every trade must be anchored to a specific, pre-identified price level — a Battle Plan zone, a Strong Level, the VWAP, the opening price, or a trend line. If price is hovering between levels in the muddy middle, there is no edge. Forcing a trade there is prediction trading — and prediction trading is how most traders get hurt. Make price come to you.
Why does Micros Trader close his trading platform between setups?
A: An open trading platform plus boredom is a dangerous combination. When the platform is open and there’s nothing to do, the temptation to take marginal trades increases dramatically. By requiring yourself to actively launch the platform before trading, you create a moment of friction — a checkpoint that forces you to confirm the trade is worth taking. This discipline has a direct positive impact on trade quality over time.
How do you know when your trading week is “made”?
A: Micros Trader benchmarks 10 points per day as a good day’s work. If you’ve accumulated a week’s worth of that benchmark — roughly 50 points — in a single trade or early in the week, your week is made. At that point, the goal shifts from growing the account to protecting it. Continuing to trade aggressively after making your week introduces unnecessary risk. Be content. Close the platform. Let the rest of the week be a bonus, not a liability.
