Small and Perfect: How to Trade Counter Setups When Bulls Dominate

Posted: Friday May 29, 2026

☀️ AM BRIEFING

Today’s ES futures morning briefing covered one of the trickiest trading environments a futures trader faces — a bull-dominated market making all-time highs with every reason to stay long… and a Battle Plan that maps a counter short right at the apex. Bulls didn’t just control today. They dominated. ES hit the expected range of 7603, made a new RTH all-time high, and the question all morning was simple: can you be small, perfect, and disciplined enough to take the counter trade and hold it? George walked through four mapped scenarios from last night’s Battle Plan, outlined exactly how to trade the apex zone between 7603 and 7609, and demonstrated live what “small and perfect” actually looks like when the short goes against you. Green day insured. Discipline tested. Lessons delivered.

Last Night’s Battle Plan: Four Scenarios for Today’s Open

Last night’s MES micro futures trade plan didn’t map one trade — it mapped four distinct scenarios. George walked through each one live this morning so traders could see exactly how they played out. This is what ES futures daily trade setups look like at a high level: you don’t predict what the market will do. You map what you will do if it does any of four different things.

  • Scenario 1 — Alternative Short to BP1, Hold a Lotto Runner: Take the short at the top, peel initial contracts at Battle Plan 1 (the first mapped target zone below), and hold a runner just in case the big move develops. ES came back and stopped out the runner. Oh well — the initial profit was already captured. A lotto runner costs nothing if your initial contracts already paid.
  • Scenario 2 — Short to BP1, Then Flip Long: Take the short, capture profit at BP1, then use a portion of those winnings to fund a long entry from one of the outlined levels below. Worst case: green day insured. Best case: a 100-plus point day. George ran the math — three-contract system, 60 points captured short, risk 10 on the long with a 10-point stop. A 100-point day was on the table.
  • Scenario 3 — Short to BP1 and Walk: Take the alternative short, exit everything at BP1 — 20 points per contract, 60 points total on three contracts — and be done. No runner. No long. Just green, clean, and closed. George called it the hardest scenario for most traders to execute. And probably the best one.
  • Scenario 4 — Ignore the Short, Wait for the Long: Bulls control, after all. You never have to short ES. Just wait for BP1 to get long, knowing the pullback in a bull market tends to run 40 to 60 points. Today’s pullback was exactly 40 points — right at Battle Plan 1. The long entry worked beautifully, and holders could still be in a runner.
When bulls control, the bears’ pullback tends to be 40 to 60 points. That’s your window for the long. Today it was exactly 40 — right at Battle Plan 1.

Trader Lesson 1

A great Battle Plan doesn’t predict what price will do. It maps what you will do across multiple scenarios — so when the market moves, you’re executing a plan, not making a decision under pressure.

Reading the Chart: Essentials Indicator, 4-Pack, and VWAP Bands

New member Fonzie got a full walkthrough this morning. But reviewing these tools is valuable for everyone. If you’ve been trading with George for a while and haven’t internalized what these things are showing you at a glance, here’s your reminder.

  • Opening Price Line: The dashed line marking where RTH opened. One of the most critical prices all session. Bulls want to hold it. Bears want to lose it. Reclaiming it after a flush is a journalable long. Losing it with a slam is a short trigger. Watch this line all day — it tells you whose team is winning each round.
  • Overnight High and Low (Yellow Dots): Marks where price traded overnight. The small vertical line shows overnight high and low. Yellow railroad tracks show the overnight halfback — the exact midpoint of the overnight range.
  • VWAP Bands: The smaller dot is 20 points from VWAP. The larger dot is 30 points away. These aren’t reversal signals — they’re a gut check. When you’re 30 points from VWAP, ask yourself: do I really want to initiate a long up here?
  • Candle Color Coding: White-to-gray candles are 8-point moves. Red “blood on the chart” candles are 15 points or more. When you see blood on the chart going against you, stand down. No knife catching.
  • The 4-Pack: Four instruments at a glance — ES, NQ, Dow, and Russell. Green means above previous day high. Upper zone means in the upper distribution. Color coding shows who’s above or below VWAP. Today: ES, NQ, and Dow were above previous day high and above VWAP. Russell was in the upper distribution but below VWAP — the one not fully participating.

Trader Lesson 2

Think of the 4-pack like a pilot’s instrument panel. You’re not just watching one plane — you’re watching four. At a glance, you know who’s above previous day high, who’s above VWAP, and who isn’t participating. Divergence tells the story.

Apex Trades and Counter-Shorting in a Bull-Dominated Market

Bulls didn’t just control today — they dominated. ES made a new RTH all-time high, hit the S&P 500 futures expected range of 7603, and then pushed even higher into the pre-mapped drop zone between 7603 and 7609. George had mapped this zone 14 hours earlier. The question wasn’t whether to short. The question was: how do you short correctly when the market is this strong?

  • The Drop Zone: 7603 to 7609. This is where George was looking for a counter short — not because the market was weak, but because price colored into a pre-mapped zone with a defined risk point above it.
  • Sizing Requirements: When you’re counter in an extreme bull move, you must be small. George came in with 116 points on the week and wasn’t willing to drop under 100. That gave him 16 points to work with — and every trade he took reflected that math exactly.
  • Hard Stop Required: This is the Trump news era. Thirty to 50-point candles happen at any moment. The prior session saw an Iran news headline produce a 38-point insta-candle. If you’re short, you have a hard stop in. Non-negotiable.
  • The Apex Entry: George wanted price in the upper distribution of the drop zone — at the apex. He took the short at 7606 with a 3-point stop. Tight. Small. Exactly right for a counter trade in a dominating bull market.
  • When Price Colors Outside the Line: ES went 7 points above the ideal short zone. That’s not a reason to abandon the trade — but it means you didn’t get a clean entry, and sizing needs to reflect the additional uncertainty.
Bulls control. Shorts are counter. Small if at all. You never have to short ES to make what you need to make. If you’re going to short, be perfect.

Trader Lesson 3

Counter trades require a defined risk budget before you enter. Know how many points you can lose today. Trade a size that keeps your worst-case inside that budget. When George took the 7606 short with a 3-point stop, he wasn’t guessing — he was doing math.

The Double-Tap Phenomenon and Trade Management Under Pressure

George took a 3-point loss on his first short. Re-entered. Took break even. Re-entered again with a market order. Then he went green. This is what managing a counter trade in a bull-dominated session actually looks like — and the double-tap is the reason it’s so hard.

  • What Is the Double-Tap? When you’re shorting against a bull trend, price will very often re-test the entry zone one more time before it moves in your direction. Sometimes you get the touch-and-go. But often it double-taps — designed to stop you out, make you think the trade failed, and take your position before the real move happens.
  • When Bears Control, It Happens Too: The double-tap is symmetrical. When bears control and you’re long, price will double-tap your entry before it moves up. Knowing this in advance changes how you manage your stop and your patience.
  • Break-Even Trades Are a Win: George took break-even multiple times today and called each one correctly. A break-even is not a failure. It means you were in the right location, managed your risk, and lived to trade the next setup. That’s a professional result.
  • The 15-Point Candle Rule: If ES starts slamming down with a string of 15-point candles, stand down. No knife catching. This rule protects you from getting destroyed chasing a move that’s already in progress.
  • Honest Self-Grading: George re-entered with a market order at one point — a judgment call he acknowledged wasn’t textbook discipline. He gave himself less than an A for it. Traders who grade their own execution honestly improve faster than traders who rationalize every decision.

Trader Lesson 4

We take small losses. We take break-evens. We take small wins and big wins. But we never take a big loss. That’s the whole game. Every other rule exists to protect that one rule.

Trader Lesson 5

When bulls control and you’re shorting, expect the double-tap. Don’t make the double-tap the reason you abandon a well-planned trade. Know it’s coming, size accordingly, and give the trade room to breathe within your risk budget.

Single Prints, Fair Value Gaps, and Today’s Key Levels

Today’s ES futures key levels weren’t just price numbers — they were structural clues about where the market has unfinished business. Understanding single prints and fair value gaps is part of reading price at a higher level, and both played a central role in today’s trade planning.

  • Single Prints: Price levels traded through quickly with minimal volume build. These zones have a magnetic quality — price tends to return to them eventually. Today’s single prints were established below current price from yesterday’s session. George’s short was specifically targeting a fill of those single prints. They defined the target, not just the direction.
  • Fair Value Gap: When a large candle creates a gap between two non-overlapping candle bodies, that’s a fair value gap — an imbalance in the market. George created one during the morning session. His goal was for it to stay open, meaning price wouldn’t retrace back to fill it. When price stays away from the gap, it adds weight to the short thesis.
  • Expected Range (7603): The outer boundary of where ES was expected to trade in the RTH session. When price hits the expected range, it’s hit a significant magnet. Longs initiated after the expected range is hit are swimming upstream. George noted this repeatedly — he wasn’t interested in longs up there.
  • ES VWAP Levels as a Battlefield: The opening price became a battle line all session. Price lost it, reclaimed it, lost it again, reclaimed it again. Each reclaim gave bulls a chance at new highs. Each loss gave shorts more fuel. Watch the opening price all day — it tells you exactly whose team is winning each round.

Trader Lesson 6

Single prints define your target, not just your direction. Before you enter a trade, know where you’re going — and have a structural reason for that target. “Down” isn’t a target. The bottom of the single prints zone is a target.

Friday Rules, End-of-Month Psychology, and Verse of the Day

It’s Friday. Final trading day of the month. Volume is lower, kids are getting out of school, and ES already hit the expected range before most people finished their coffee. Days like this require a different kind of futures trading discipline — knowing when to stop, how much to risk, and how to stay green when the easy trades are behind you.

  • Friday Rules Apply: Liquidity shifts. Moves can be fast and thin. The best setups often come early, and by mid-session the risk-reward degrades sharply. George stopped himself from additional trades once green was locked in. Be content. Adjust afternoon risk settings.
  • Know Your Daily Risk Budget: George came in with 116 points on the week and was willing to risk down to 100. That’s 16 points — and every trade he took was sized and stopped to fit inside that number. This is professional risk management in practice. Not a feeling. Math.
  • Stop Trading in Your Best Hours: George called it at 10:12 AM. Not because the market closed — because green was locked, the risk budget was mostly used, and the setups weren’t clean. Come back next week.
  • Verse of the Day — “Though He Falls, He Shall Not Be Cast Down”: Drawdowns are not defeat. George connected this directly to journaling practice — write it, say it out loud, hear it. Whisper Flow, voice dictation, reading journal entries aloud. Repetition creates retention. The number-one phrase George says most often, according to his own AI transcript analysis? “Bulls control.” Say the rules. They will sink in.
Stop trading when you’ve locked green and the setups aren’t clean. Be content. That’s not quitting — that’s professional discipline.

Trader Lesson 7

Drawdowns are not defeat. Every trader falls. What matters is that you take the small loss like a professional, journal it, say it out loud, and come back tomorrow. “Though he falls, he shall not be cast down.”

“We take small losses. We take break-evens. We take small wins and big wins. But we never, ever take a big loss.”

❓ FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

COMMON QUESTIONS FOR ES FUTURES TRADERS

What is an apex trade, and how do you trade it correctly?

A: An apex trade is a counter-trend entry at the extreme top or bottom of a move — the point where price is most extended and risk-reward is theoretically highest. To trade it correctly, you must be in the right pre-mapped zone (George used 7603–7609 today), take a very small position, use a hard stop (George used 3 points), and accept that you may be stopped out once before the trade works. Never take an apex trade without a defined risk budget and a hard stop already placed. Being “small and perfect” is not optional for apex trades.

What does “bulls dominate” mean versus “bulls control”?

A: “Bulls control” is George’s default characterization when the bulls hold structural advantage — price is above key levels, bias is long, and shorts should be small and counter. “Bulls dominate” is a step beyond — used when the bulls are not just in control but aggressively pushing to new highs with little resistance. Today, ES made a new RTH all-time high and hit the expected range before 9 AM. That’s domination. When bulls dominate, the word “counter” applies to virtually every short — and the sizing and stop discipline requirements become even stricter.

What are single prints, and why do they matter?

A: Single prints are price levels where the market traded through quickly with very little volume or time spent — essentially a thin, fast move that left an imbalance in the market profile. Because there’s no real acceptance at those prices, the market has a tendency to return to them eventually. In today’s session, a zone of single prints sat below current price and served as George’s primary downside target for his short trade. Knowing where single prints are gives your trade a specific structural target rather than a vague directional hope.

What is the double-tap phenomenon, and how should futures traders handle it?

A: The double-tap is the tendency for price to re-test a counter-trade entry zone one more time before moving in the intended direction. When you’re short against a bull trend, price will often pull back to your short entry level (or just above it) before rolling over. This second test frequently stops out traders who used a tight stop on the first entry. The best way to handle it: expect it, size your position small enough that a near-miss or stop-out doesn’t damage your P&L significantly, and be prepared to re-enter if the structural thesis is still intact. George noted that longs get double-tapped in bear markets just as often.

What is the Three-Contract System, and how was it used in today’s scenarios?

A: The Three-Contract System is George’s core position sizing framework for ES futures trading. You enter with three contracts, peel the first at an initial profit target (locking in gains and reducing risk), peel the second at a second target, and hold the third as a “lotto runner” for maximum potential. In today’s Scenario 1, peeling at Battle Plan 1 netted 20 points per contract on the first two — 40 points total — while the runner held for a potential extended move. In Scenario 2, capturing 60 points on all three at BP1 then risking 10 of them on a long gave traders a built-in funded position with defined risk.

What is the 15-Point Candle Rule?

A: The 15-Point Candle Rule is a Stand Down signal. When ES begins printing a string of 15-point candles in a single direction — especially against your position — you do not try to fade the move, average down, or “catch the knife.” You stand down, step away, and wait for the move to exhaust itself before looking for a new setup. George’s Essentials Indicator highlights these candles in red (“blood on the chart”) so they’re visually obvious in real time. The rule exists because news-driven moves in the current environment (particularly Trump-era macro headlines) can produce 30 to 50-point insta-candles with zero warning.

What is the expected range, and what does hitting it mean for your trading bias?

A: The expected range is a pre-calculated outer boundary for the day’s price action — the level beyond which price is statistically less likely to continue. Today’s expected range was 7603. When ES hit that level before 9 AM, it reached a major magnet that had drawn price upward all morning. Once the expected range is hit, George’s bias shifts: longs taken above it are swimming upstream, because the magnet is already satisfied. Shorts in the expected range zone become the primary opportunity — though they must still be small and counter given the bull-dominant backdrop.

What is a fair value gap, and how was it used today?

A: A fair value gap (FVG) is a price imbalance zone created when a large candle moves so quickly that it leaves a gap between two non-overlapping candle bodies. The market often returns to these zones to “fill” the imbalance. Today, a fair value gap formed during the morning session. George’s goal was for the gap to stay open — meaning price wouldn’t retrace back through it — because a gap that stays open supports the short thesis. When price began pushing back toward the gap, it added pressure to his short and warned that the move might reverse.

How should a trader calculate their daily risk budget for ES futures?

A: Your daily risk budget is the maximum number of points you’re willing to lose in a single session, calculated based on your weekly or monthly context. George’s example today: he was up 116 points for the week and unwilling to drop below 100. That gave him exactly 16 points to risk across all trades for the day. Every position size, every stop placement, and every re-entry decision was filtered through that 16-point ceiling. If a trade required more than 16 points of risk to execute properly, he simply didn’t take it. This is not a feeling — it’s math done before the session starts.
