MES MICROS TRADE PLAN
Trade Location Over Everything — The Short That Proved It
Posted: Thursday May 21, 2026
Today’s MES micro futures trade plan session was a masterclass in patience over prediction. With ES futures locked in the upper distribution of the established range and all four indices above their VWAPs, there was nothing to do for the first 55 minutes — and George said so clearly, out loud, every step of the way. When the right trade location finally appeared — a short off a wicked candle at 7437 — the setup was clean, the stop was defined, and the management played out exactly as designed. The session delivered a 25-point short in a market that is 100% bulls control. And running through everything, from last night’s Battle Plan to today’s live commentary, was one message: the journal is the single tool that can transform a struggling trader into the trader they were meant to be.
Trade Location Over Entry — Patience Is the Only Edge
George said it at 8:35, at 8:45, at 8:50, and again at 9:00: we need to get to an edge. The middle of the range is low-probability trading. No exceptions. Today’s ES futures daily trade setup was not about finding a creative entry in neutral territory — it was about refusing to participate until price came to a location where the odds were clearly stacked in one direction.
- The Middle of the Range: When price is between the Bull-Bear Line and the top of the range, the probability of a clean directional trade is at its lowest. Neither bulls nor bears have a structural edge — you’re just guessing. George calls this “death price action.”
- Three Scratches = Walk Away: Yesterday, George took three scratch trades in the middle of the range and closed his platform. Not because three scratches means you’re wrong — but because three scratches at the same location means the market is telling you something. Listen.
- What to Do Instead: Set an alert at your target level. Do something else. Come back when price has done the work. Don’t watch it. Don’t re-evaluate every 30 seconds. Let the alert find you.
- Today’s Patience in Numbers: George waited 55+ minutes into the session before taking a single trade. The setup was a short at 7437 — the right trade location — not a long in the red zone at 8:10.
Trader Lesson 1
Three scratches at the same location is not bad luck — it’s information. The market is telling you the location is wrong. Close the platform. Set an alert. Walk away.
Journaling: The Slow Path to the Trader You Were Meant to Be
Last night’s Battle Plan opened with something George rarely puts in writing — a full meditation on the power of journaling. He brought it to the Zoom session this morning, and it’s worth repeating. This isn’t motivational filler. This is a practical framework with a direct line to cumulative P&L.
- The Market as a Predator: “The market is like a lion and a temptress prowling to devour you, to tempt you, at every turn.” Transformation — not discipline tricks or indicators — is the only answer. And the vehicle for that transformation is the journal.
- Why Journaling Works: It forces you to sit with your decisions longer. It makes you question entries more deeply. It exposes patterns in your own behavior that you would never catch in real-time.
- The Speed Bump: Writing demands that you slow down. After a trade — especially a loss — that slowdown is exactly what you need. The journal is a speed bump between the emotional response and the next mouse click.
- Reading Out Loud: George specifically called out reading your journal aloud. “It hits differently.” Verbalizing what you wrote forces a level of honesty that silent reading doesn’t.
- The Pre-Trade Journal: The goal is to reach the point where you’re journaling your trade before you place it — mapping the entry, the stop, the target, the scenario. That mapping process is the discipline. It makes you think before you act.
- The Outcome: Cumulative P&L from the lower left to the upper right. That is the direct result of a consistent journaling practice over time.
Trader Lesson 2
Before your next trade, write it down first. Where are you entering? Where’s your stop? What’s the setup? If you can’t journal it clearly, you’re not ready to place it.
Upper Distribution Rules: Shorting in a Bull Market
Bulls control. Shorts are counter. Small if at all. Those three phrases define the current ES futures market bias — and yet George took a short today that worked. Here’s how those two things coexist, and why trade location made it possible.
- Upper Distribution Defined: The established range has a top and a bottom. The upper distribution is the upper half of that range — closer to the range high. When price is in that zone, “it’s often a better place to look for a short than a long.” That’s not a bearish call. It’s a range-based observation. Range rules rule.
- The Right Location for a Short: George identified a box level near 7437. When price wicked up into that box and began to fail, the location was clean. Small stop. Clear backside. Defined risk. He placed the order.
- Why Longs Don’t Work Well in the Red Zone: Going long in the upper distribution has a poor track record over a large sample. “I just know me.” Not a blanket rule for all traders — but a data-driven personal rule that has held up over time.
- Yesterday as a Lesson: Yesterday’s price went 50 points from the bottom of the range to the top — exactly as the Battle Plan mapped. Three scratches in the middle told George to stand down. Sometimes calling the move correctly and not being in it is still the right outcome.
Trader Lesson 3
Bulls control does not mean shorts can’t work — it means treat them as counter trades. Get in at the best possible location, size small, and take profit early. Never let a counter trade become a prediction that the bull run is over.
Managing the Short: See Money, Take Money
Today’s actual trade was a short at 7437. Here’s how George managed it from entry to exit — and what the Three-Contract System mindset looked like even on a single contract.
- Entry: Short at 7437 on a wicked candle at the box level in the upper distribution. Setup confirmed by a frontside break level on the 1-minute chart and a failing VWAP test.
- Add #1: Added a contract below the opening price — a clear structural level. “A little early, but I went for it.” Combined stop moved to break even immediately. Risk fully eliminated.
- Platform Closed: After moving the stop to break even, George closed his platform. “It doesn’t need me anymore.” This is not laziness — it is discipline. Watching the trade introduces emotion. Emotion introduces bad decisions.
- Exit: TP’d on the first contract early. Runner stopped out on the bounce at approximately the 50% retrace level. Total captured: approximately 25 points. Green day secured.
- The Mental Three-Contract Replay: George noted that even on a single contract, he can replay the management using the three-contract framework as a mental exercise for his journal. That mental rep is how you practice the system when you can’t execute all three legs.
Trader Lesson 4
Once you’ve added and moved your combined stop to break even, close the platform. The trade doesn’t need you. Your only job now is to not interfere with the plan you already built.
Market Context: Bulls Near All-Time Highs, Holiday Weekend Ahead
The broader picture heading into a three-day weekend — with Memorial Day on Monday, May 25 — remains bullish. Here is the data behind the bias.
- All-Time High Within Sight: ES futures are approximately 1.3% from the all-time high. All four major indices are in the upper distribution of their respective ranges. That is a structural magnet — and also a reason not to chase longs at current levels.
- No Real Sell Day Yet: George flagged this twice. We have not had a proper, high-volume sell day in this run. That doesn’t mean it’s coming today — but it’s in the back of every careful trader’s mind. When it comes, it will be sharp.
- Weekly POC at Bull-Bear Line: The weekly Point of Control — the highest-volume price node for the week — lines up exactly with the Bull-Bear Line. That’s confluence. It explains why price keeps gravitating back to that level. It’s where the most business has been done.
- NVIDIA Earnings: Revenue up 87%. Stock up approximately 90 cents. “Priced for perfection.” The muted reaction added no directional catalyst — just more reason to wait for a real edge.
- Holiday Weekend Tendencies: Friday before a three-day weekend often sees lower volume, reduced follow-through, and a market that wants to resolve cleanly rather than open new risk heading into a long closure.
Next Week’s Economic Calendar
| Date | Event | Significance |
|---|---|---|
| Mon May 25 | Market Closed — Memorial Day | Three-day weekend. No trading. |
| Tue May 26 | Consumer Confidence | Low expected market impact. |
| Wed May 27 | No major reports | Quiet midweek session. |
| Thu May 28 | PCE + Unemployment Claims + New Home Sales | PCE is a red-folder event — rarely moves the market as much as feared, but worth marking. |
Trader Lesson 5
Set alerts at your Battle Plan levels and walk away from dead price action. Mental energy is finite. Burning it on flat candles for 45 minutes means you have less of it when the real setup arrives.
“The journal asks for your patience and your attention, but it gives back something much more — the trader you were meant to be.”
COMMON QUESTIONS FOR ES FUTURES TRADERS
What does “Bulls Control, Shorts Are Counter, Small If At All” mean?
A: This is the core session bias phrase at MicrosTrader.com. “Bulls control” means the overall trend and structure favor the long side — price is in an uptrend making higher highs. “Shorts are counter” means any short trade goes against the dominant direction and carries a higher risk of failure. “Small if at all” means if you do take a short, reduce your contract size significantly. This phrase is a constant reminder to be selective and humble when fading the trend rather than trading with it.
What is the upper distribution and why does it matter for ES futures trade location?
A: Every established range has a top and a bottom. The upper distribution is the upper half — the zone closer to the range high. When ES futures are in the upper distribution, the statistical edge for initiating new longs is reduced because price is near structural resistance. It is, however, a better location to consider shorts. George’s core principle: range rules rule. Going long at the top of an established range carries a much lower probability than going long at the bottom.
How did George manage his short trade today and what was the result?
A: George entered a short at 7437 on a wicked candle at his box level in the upper distribution. He added a second contract when price broke below the opening price and immediately moved the combined stop to break even — eliminating all risk on the trade. He took profit on the first contract early, then let a single runner go on a trailer. The runner was stopped out on a bounce at approximately the 50% retrace. Total captured: approximately 25 points. Green day secured.
What is the Three-Contract System?
A: The Three-Contract System is MicrosTrader’s core position sizing framework for ES and MES futures. You enter with three contracts. On the first target, you take profit on one — locking in a gain and reducing exposure. On the second target, you take profit on a second contract. The third is the lotto runner — let it ride with a trailing stop, targeting a larger potential move. Today George traded one contract but ran the three-contract management as a mental exercise for his journal, because practicing the framework correctly matters even when you cannot execute all three legs.
What is the 15-Point Candle Rule?
A: The 15-Point Candle Rule is a caution flag for ES futures traders. When a 15-point or larger candle appears on the chart — a sudden, sharp directional spike — the traditional rule is to wait until price has bounced off at least two fresh levels before entering a new trade. The large candle signals high-velocity, unpredictable price action. One exception George noted: a 15-point candle that drives directly into a fresh level you have been targeting may still be tradeable, because the location provides the structural justification the entry needs.
What is the Initial Balance and why do IB highs and lows matter?
A: The Initial Balance (IB) is the price range established during the first hour of Regular Trading Hours — 9:30 to 10:30 AM ET. The IB high and IB low become key reference levels for the rest of the session. Statistically, the market takes out IB highs more often than IB lows — a structurally bullish tendency. When an IB level is breached with conviction, it often signals a directional commitment for the remainder of the day. Today’s IB low held, which George noted as a continued sign of bull control.
Why does George call the middle of the range “low probability” trading?
A: In the middle of the range, neither bulls nor bears have a clear structural edge. There is no nearby support or resistance that strongly favors one direction. Entries taken in that zone require larger stops because the nearest meaningful level is far away, which compresses the risk-to-reward ratio. George describes the resulting price action as “death price action” — flat, directionless candles that consume mental energy and generate scratches. His rule: wait for price to reach an edge — the top or bottom of the range — before considering any trade.
What is the Bull-Bear Line and why is it significant?
A: The Bull-Bear Line is the key dividing level between bullish and bearish bias — a specific price level where the market has done significant volume work over time. Price above the Bull-Bear Line signals bulls in control; price below it shifts the bias toward bears. This week, the weekly Point of Control — the highest-volume price node for the entire week — aligned exactly with the Bull-Bear Line, adding extra significance. When price revisits the Bull-Bear Line, it becomes a critical moment: hold it and continue higher, or lose it and shift the bias.
Why is journaling described as the one surefire way to transform as a trader?
A: George explained it directly in last night’s Battle Plan: journaling forces you to sit with your decisions longer, question your entries more deeply, and notice the patterns in your own behavior. Most traders repeat the same mistakes because they never slow down long enough to see them. The journal is a speed bump between the emotional response and the next action. The ultimate goal is to journal a trade before placing it — mapping the entry, stop, target, and scenario. That pre-trade mapping is the discipline that separates traders who grow from those who stagnate. Cumulative P&L from the lower left to the upper right follows from that practice.
