Micro trading means trading MES micro futures, the smaller cousin of the ES E-mini futures contract, at one-tenth the size and one-tenth the dollar risk per point. It lets you learn a real day trading system with real money on the line while a single mistake stays small. Trade micros with precision and your loss profile becomes break-evens, small losses, small wins, and big wins, with the one outcome that ruins accounts removed from the table.

01

What Is Micro Trading?

A micro futures contract tracks the same index as its full-size E-mini, moves tick for tick with it, and settles into the same market. The difference is size. One ES E-mini futures contract carries $50 per point. One MES micro futures contract carries $5 per point. Same chart, same levels, same Battle Plan, one-tenth the exposure.

That gap changes everything for a developing trader. On ES futures, a six-point stop is $300. On MES, that same six points is $30. You are trading the exact same setup at the exact same Strong Level, and you are risking the price of lunch instead of a car payment. Micros let you practice precision where the stakes are survivable, which is why George teaches new traders to start on MES before scaling into ES.

“If you can’t trade small successfully… you’ll never trade large successfully. You must earn the right to trade with larger leverage, and it all starts on the MES Micros contract. And that’s why we are called Micros Trader.”
— GEORGE, MICROSTRADER

02

One MES Contract Is Bigger Than It Feels

Here is the trap. MES looks small because the margin is small. The exposure tells a different story. One MES micro futures contract controls roughly 50 shares of SPY, so the real money moving under your account is far larger than the ticket price suggests. Do the math on a single contract.

The real money behind one MES contract
MeasureAmount
SPY share price$754
Shares controlled per MES50
Market exposure from one MES$37,700

Now stack a few on. Three MES contracts control about $113,000 of exposure. That is six figures of the S&P 500 moving under your account with three “micro” contracts on. This is why George teaches you to size down, define your stop first, and never add a contract just because it is cheap to. You post a small margin, and the exposure behind it is real money. Respect the risk, and it will respect your account back.

03

Why Precision Beats Size

Most traders blow up for one reason. They take a big loss. One oversized position, one revenge trade, one refusal to honor a stop, and weeks of green disappear in a single afternoon. Micro trading removes the fuel from that fire. When your worst case on a trade is small, no single trade can hurt you, and the account gets to keep compounding.

This is the heart of the Core Strategy. Your job is not to be right big. Your job is to never take a big loss. Break-evens are fine. Small losses are the cost of doing business. Small wins add up. Big wins take care of themselves when you let a runner run. The only outcome you refuse to accept is the catastrophic one, and micros make refusing it easy.

Precision also means location. The right trade in the wrong place is still a losing trade. Micros give you the room to demand the right trade in the right location every time, because you are never so overleveraged that fear pushes you to chase.

04

The 3-Contract System On Micros

Precision is not just how much you risk. It is how you manage the trade once you are in. The 3-Contract System is built for micros. You enter with three MES contracts at a Strong Level. As price works in your favor, you peel off contracts and lock in profit, then move your stop to break even so the trade can no longer cost you anything.

Here is how it flows. Contract one comes off at your first target and pays for the trade. Contract two comes off into strength and books the day green. Contract three becomes a single runner that you hold for the big win, with a stop trailing safely behind the last Strong Level. Learn the full mechanics in the 3-Contract System, then apply it on micros until it is automatic.

On MES, three contracts is $15 per point of total exposure. You get every lesson of scaling out, protecting profit, and letting a runner breathe, all while risking a fraction of what a single ES contract would cost you. That is precision you can afford to repeat a thousand times.

05

Control Your Impulses, Control Your Results

Micros can change your life, and they can also expose your worst habits. Because each contract is cheap, the temptation is to add size out of boredom, to overtrade, to talk yourself into setups that are not there. Cheap contracts stacked recklessly become an expensive problem fast. The trader who wins is the one who takes fewer, higher-quality, pre-planned trades.

Want proof that discipline pays? A single MES runner captured on a clean move can pay for the trading room by itself. You do not need ten trades. You need one good one, taken at the right level, managed with the 3-Contract System, and closed when the market gives you your points. Take your green and be done. Green Over Greed keeps the day a winner.

06

Sizing Up The Right Way

Micros are not a permanent cap. They are a proving ground. As your discipline holds and your journal shows clean execution, you earn the right to trade larger. That might mean stepping from three MES to six, or graduating to a single ES E-mini futures contract once your process is trustworthy under pressure.

The rule that governs the climb is simple. Stay within your leverage metrics so that no single trade can do real damage to your account. Size follows skill. When you can prove consistency on micros, you scale. When you cannot, you stay small and keep building. The market rewards the trader who is faithful with a few before it hands them command of many.

Q

Frequently Asked Questions

What is micro trading in futures?
Micro trading is buying and selling micro futures contracts like MES, which track the same index as the full-size ES E-mini futures contract at one-tenth the size. Each MES point is worth $5 instead of $50, so you trade the same setups and levels with far smaller dollar risk per trade.
How much money do you need to trade micro futures?
Because MES carries roughly one-tenth the risk of ES, a single micro contract requires far less margin and lets a smaller account absorb normal stop losses without damage. The exact figure depends on your broker, but micros are specifically designed so a developing trader can trade real setups without oversized exposure.
Should beginners trade micros or E-minis first?
Beginners should start on MES micro futures before moving to ES futures. Micros let you learn a full day trading system, practice the 3-Contract System, and take real losses that stay small while you build discipline. You scale up to E-minis only after your journal proves consistent execution.
Can you make a living trading micro futures?
Trading micros can meaningfully change your income when you manage risk with precision, though results depend on skill, discipline, and consistency. The path is capturing steady points, protecting profit with scaling, and never taking a big loss, then increasing size only as your process earns it.
Why do traders use the 3-Contract System on micros?
The 3-Contract System lets a micro trader peel off contracts to lock in profit, move the stop to break even, and hold a single runner for a larger move. On MES the total dollar risk stays small, so you can practice professional trade management on every setup without oversized exposure.
What is the biggest mistake in micro trading?
The biggest mistake is treating cheap contracts as a license to overtrade or oversize. Micros reward precision and punish impulse. Traders who take fewer, higher-quality, pre-planned trades and refuse to ever take a big loss are the ones who turn micro trading into a lasting edge.
