What a Trading Mentor Does: You Are the Pilot, I Am the Navigator
What a real trading mentor actually does… and the one job he refuses to do for you.
2022–2026
A real trading mentor maps the terrain and points out the hazards. You fly the plane. George’s job in the live futures trading room is to mark where price is likely to go, flag the landmines, and keep you on the right side of price action. Every entry, exit, and dollar of risk stays yours. That’s the whole arrangement in one line: you are the pilot, he is the navigator.
“You’re like the pilot. I’m like the navigator. I’m helping you navigate.”
This page gathers what George teaches about the mentor’s role across hundreds of live ES E-mini futures and MES micro futures sessions… the pilot/navigator picture, the sherpa up the mountain, why he won’t take a trade for you, and the goal that surprises most new traders. His goal is that you don’t need him.
You Are the Pilot, I Am the Navigator
Start with the picture George returns to more than any other. Think of the old F-14. Two seats. The pilot up front flies the plane and pulls the trigger. The navigator sits behind, calling out hazards, other aircraft, terrain. That back seat is George.
“I’m wanting to point out landmines and obstacles and where are the other planes and all of that. That’s my job while you’re being the pilot.”
Notice what the navigator never does. He does not grab the stick. He calls the terrain and trusts the pilot to fly. Every day George lays out where he wants to go long, where he wants to short, where you need to be careful, and which ideas look strongest… “That’s my entire goal as the leader of the group is giving these larger visions on the chart” (June 23, 2026). The larger vision is his. The trade is yours.
He frames the same relationship a second way. A teammate… “I’m one of the partners on your trading team” (Oct 24, 2025). And the partner can only do so much: “if you don’t put it on your chart, I can’t help you. You know, I can only give you the coordinates and tell you how to do it, but you have to actually put it on your chart.” The coordinates arrive every session. Plotting them is on you. If you want the daily set of coordinates, that’s the Battle Plan.
The Sherpa Up the Mountain
The pilot picture covers a single trade. The sherpa picture covers the whole climb. From his earliest sessions in 2022, George cast himself as the guide who walks ahead on a route he already knows… “lead you almost like a sherpa up the mountain, help you avoid the pitfalls, help you be prepared” (Nov 12, 2022). A sherpa carries the map and knows where the crevasses hide. He does not carry you.
“You’re in charge of your education. I am only your Sherpa. I’m only leading you up the mountain.”
That line puts ownership where George insists it belongs. You are in charge of your own education. He guides… and the traders who dig into the review material climb far faster than the ones who only show up for the live call: “I know that people who dig into that stuff accelerate way faster”. The sherpa can point up the mountain. Your legs do the walking.
The One Job He Won’t Do: Take Your Trade
Here is the line every mentor worth his salt draws hard. George will map the level. He will talk the setup. He will not tell you to click buy… “I mean, it was plain as day. I’m just not going to tell you, hey, take this trade” (Feb 5, 2026). Why hold that line? Because the decision has to be yours, taken on your own confirmation, so you can own the outcome either way.
“Don’t ever let me talk you out of a trade. We talked about the pros and cons of it, and you get to do you. Just know where you’re wrong and get out.”
That phrase, “you do you,” runs through years of sessions. He recommends. He does not command… “if you’re short from above, I’m recommending you do you. One trader’s opinion is I’d be having my stop here” (Jan 13, 2026). And he coaches both directions on purpose, so his own position never bends your read: “I’m going to talk both sides of each entry. You know, yesterday I was outlining longs for you while I was still short” (June 16, 2026). Some days he keeps his own trade quiet entirely. “Never allow me to influence what you see on the chart yourself” (May 11, 2026).
None of it is financial advice, and he never lets you forget it. Do your own thinking:
“Nothing is financial advice. Never listen to a guy on the internet, someone who has a YouTube channel. Just don’t listen to him. Make your own decisions.”
It is one trader’s opinion trying to help… “it’s just one trader’s opinion, it is not the law, it is not the fact” (Nov 16, 2022). Own every entry, own every exit, and you build a trader who lasts. That is the same standard behind knowing where you’re wrong before you ever enter.
What the Navigator Actually Does All Day
If he won’t take the trade, what fills the session? Three things. He maps the path. He labels the danger. He keeps the room on the right side of price action. Start with the map. George envisions the likely route before the bell and draws it… “Nice mapping. That’s my job. That’s my goal” (June 8, 2026). Then he calls out which trades carry extra risk so you can gauge your own tolerance: “I try to make sure I outline when they’re risky” (June 8, 2026).
| The job | What it looks like live | What stays yours |
|---|---|---|
| Map the path | Draw the likely route: long zones, short zones, targets, add-on spots. | Choosing to enter, and where. |
| Flag the hazards | Label risky trades, mark landmines, warn on bad locations. | Your own risk tolerance and size. |
| Hold your position | Keep you on the right side of price action, remind you of principles. | Every exit and every runner. |
That third job is the one traders underrate. His measure of a good day may surprise you… “I am not coming here every day saying, I’ve got to get my guys an entry. No, my goal is to keep you on the right side of price action” (May 18, 2026). Some weeks the best thing a navigator does is keep you out of the ditch:
“I hope I kept you safe. I don’t think I made you any money, but hopefully I kept you safe.”
Mental accounts safe. Trading accounts safe. Live to trade another day. That’s the win when price gives nothing. And it puts his own trading in its proper place… “I need to be the best navigator I can. I don’t need a trade today” (Apr 15, 2026). If you’re in a position and the chart goes murky, he wants you to reach out for a read (Mar 18, 2026), while you stay in charge of the trade. Reading who controls the tape is a skill of its own. See who controls the market.
It’s About Your Trading
Most trading rooms revolve around one guy’s P&L on a big screen. George built the opposite. The room stands on the Core Strategy… “I’m just the captain of the ship. And that ship is our core strategy at its foundation” (Mar 19, 2025). Swap the captain and the ship still sails, because the ship is the system.
“Our trading group is not about me. It is not about my trading. I want it to be about you and your development.”
The value is a calm, clear plan with no guessing, run by someone who wants you to win… “It’s a calm, clear plan with no guessing. Leader who truly cares if you succeed, and I do” (May 15, 2026). Everybody takes the same trade, at the same location, for the same reason. That shared playbook is the point, and it is what makes the room feel like a team rather than an audience. More on that in Never Trade Alone and Inside a Live Futures Trading Room.
The Goal: You Don’t Need Me
Here is the part that unsettles most new members. George refuses to build dependent students. He says the quiet part out loud… “I’m not creating any… in fact, I’m teaching you not to need me” (Nov 16, 2022). The finish line is self-sufficiency:
“My goal is, if I get you trained up, you don’t need me. You can leave the group… the goal is for the group to support itself. I am not your personal coach.”
Teach a man to fish. That’s the whole model… “I want to teach you to fish. I want you to not need me, but want to be in the room because of the success you’re experiencing” (Nov 12, 2022). Stay for the wins and the community, long after you can read the chart on your own.
There is a hard limit to what any mentor can hand you, and George names it flat. He can teach the mechanical part fast. The self-control part is on you:
“I can teach people how to draw levels on your chart that when price gets to them, they bounce. I can teach you that pretty quickly. Teaching you to walk away from the chart and say, ‘No, thank you.’ Well, that one’s on you.”
He can’t take your hand off the mouse. He can’t turn off your computer for you. Drawing Strong Levels is teachable in an afternoon. Restraint is the trader’s own work, and it gets its own study in Close Your Trading Platform. Build both and you outgrow the need for a navigator… which was always the plan.
Is This the Trading Mentor You Are Looking For?
If you are comparing trading mentors right now, here is what you are actually comparing. George runs a live ES and MES futures room every trading morning, and has since April 2018… 1,115 live sessions and counting, every one recorded. You watch the navigator work in real time, on today’s chart, while it is still moving.
One plan, together. The Battle Plan publishes the route the night before. In the morning the whole room trades that same plan at the same locations for the same reasons. You never have to guess what the mentor sees, because you are looking at the same map he is.
You can audit him before you spend a dime. Every Tuesday the live session streams free on YouTube… the levels are on George’s chart and you watch how the room handles them. Read how the free Tuesday session works. Want receipts? The Hall of Fame keeps timestamped setups where the levels played out, pulled straight from the recordings. Want to learn the system first? The Free Foundations Course and the Battle Plan Boot Camp cost nothing and need no card.
Ready to sit in the back seat and watch a navigator work? Here is how to join the live Zoom room. Bring your own chart. You fly the plane.
