Pray Without Ceasing: A Christian Day Trader’s Prayer and Gratitude Practice
Every MicrosTrader session opens with scripture before it opens with charts. Here is the whole practice… constant prayer, daily gratitude, and a peace that no P&L can give you.
2022–2026
Pray without ceasing comes from 1 Thessalonians 5:17. For a day trader, it means carrying a running conversation with God through the whole session… before the open, in the middle of a trade, after a win, after a loss. George opens every live ES E-mini futures session on MicrosTrader with a scripture and a prayer before a single chart appears, because a prepared soul steadies a trading mind the way no indicator ever will.
“This week’s scripture, 1 Thessalonians 5:17, pray without ceasing. So small, but so beautiful.”
This page gathers everything George teaches about prayer and gratitude across years of live sessions… why constant prayer belongs at a trading desk, what to pray when the market humbles you, and the three-line gratitude practice that starts his journal every single morning.
A Running Conversation, Even in a Hard Week
Pray without ceasing sounds enormous. George keeps it simple. Five words, prayed all week long, through green days and red ones. He picks one verse, holds it for the week, and lets it walk with him into the live trading room. Some weeks the verse and the market collide head-on:
“1 Thessalonians 5:17, pray without ceasing. Pray without ceasing. Might need that this week. Put your hard hats on.”
Ceaseless prayer includes persistence. Jesus told a parable for exactly this, and George brings it straight to traders staring down a rough stretch:
“Luke 18:1. Then he spoke a parable to them that men always ought to pray and not lose heart. Absolutely. I agree. I agree.”
And he models it out loud. When his wife Tammy had a job interview coming, George asked his community, live on the stream, to pray for her:
“Any prayers you could send my wife’s direction, her name is Tammy… they would be a blessing to her.”
That openness sits at the heart of Together We Trade Better. A futures trading room can pray together. This one does.
Pray About Everything, With Thanksgiving
What does prayer do for a trader’s mind? It takes the worry off your hands. Worry wrecks execution… it tightens stops that should breathe, forces entries that should wait, and turns one loss into three. George’s answer comes from Philippians 4:6:
“This week’s scripture is Philippians 4:6… don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be known to God.”
“Don’t worry about anything. Instead, pray about everything… and the peace of God, which is so great you can’t understand it, will come to you.”
Notice the second half of the verse: with thanksgiving. Prayer and gratitude travel together. You bring the request and the thanks in the same breath. That posture carries straight into risk management, because a trader at peace follows the plan… and a worried trader abandons it. George even prays about the specific emotions that break traders:
“When I feel the pull of impatience, the sting of a loss, or the intoxicating promise of easy money, remind me to pause and seek your guidance first. Strengthen my self-control so that my decisions flow from wisdom rather than emotion.”
Impatience, the sting of a loss, the promise of easy money. Those three feelings sit behind almost every blown account. Pray through them before you trade through them.
When You Don’t Know What to Pray
Some mornings the words won’t come. A drawdown drags on, the market makes no sense, and you sit there empty. Scripture covers that morning too. Romans 8:26 promises the Holy Spirit intercedes for you when you run out of words:
“So, when you don’t know what to pray for, you can ask the Holy Spirit to please pray for you, because the Spirit knows what you need. It is a wonderful, beautiful thing to know that you have the Holy Spirit on your side interceding for us in our prayers.”
And when the confusion is about the market itself (which way, which level, whether to trade at all), James 1:5 gives a trader a third option beyond forcing a decision or freezing up:
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God who gives generously to all without reproach and it will be given to him… He doesn’t scold us for not knowing. He doesn’t shame us for our confusion. He simply gives.”
Without reproach. God never shames you for the losing streak or the setup you can’t read. For the drawdown seasons, George prays this over the community word for word:
“Father, help me see my trading challenges as opportunities to build perseverance rather than reasons to quit. Give me the strength to trust my process during drawdowns and the wisdom to learn from every test you allow me to face. Amen.”
Borrow that prayer. It pairs with Be a Professional Loser… the trading-side discipline for the same hard seasons.
Give Thanks in All Circumstances… Including Red Days
One verse past “pray without ceasing” sits its partner, 1 Thessalonians 5:18: give thanks in all circumstances. All means all. Green days and red days. The 30-point runner and the full stop-out. George spent an entire November teaching thanksgiving verse by verse, and he never dodged the hard part:
“So easy to say when things are going good. It’s really difficult to say when things are going bad. Real difficult.”
Why thank God for a losing day? Because every one of them carries a lesson with your name on it:
“In bad you can praise and sing… because I can promise you, there is something you need to learn from every one of those situations.”
Gratitude also lives in the small stuff. Colossians 4:2 calls you to stay watchful and thankful, and George grounds it in things a trader walks past every day:
“You get to go over to the refrigerator, open it up, and grab yourself a Dr Pepper… be thankful. If you have the freedom to do that, the freedom to vote for whoever you want to. Freedom. Be thankful.”
Daniel prayed and gave thanks on his knees three times a day, every day, whatever it cost him. That scheduled, repeated, non-negotiable rhythm looks a lot like a trader’s daily routine. Build the thanks in the same way you build the Pre-Flight Checklist: same time, same order, no exceptions.
The Daily Gratitude Practice: Three Names Every Morning
Here is where the theology becomes a habit you can copy tomorrow. George’s trading journal opens with gratitude before it records a single trade. Line one, line two, line three… written fresh every morning before the ES futures open:
“I’m going to just type in gratitude for the Lord… I’m going to type in wife. That’s always my second gratitude. And then let’s add a number three. Children and grandchildren.”
The list barely changes, and that is the point. The Lord, the wife, the children and grandchildren… day after day, year after year. Repetition keeps the priorities loud. And the practice does real work on your trading, because it answers the question every futures day trader eventually faces at the screen:
“Your gratitude, in my opinion, keeps your eye on the prize. Who am I fighting for here? For me, it’s my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. My wife, angel from heaven, and my children. I was born to be their dad… So, they are my gratitudes every single day for me. This is what I’m working for.”
When the prize sits beyond the P&L, a red day loses its sting and a green day loses its grip. Gratitude even shapes the exit. Quick, easy green in the first hour? Receive it like a gift, and let thankfulness walk you away from the screen:
“Can you walk and say, ‘I’m done. Thank you for the gift. I get to go enjoy my day’?”
That is Green Over Greed with a thankful heart behind it. Start your own version inside a trading journal: three gratitudes at the top of the page, every day, before any market notes. Sixty seconds. It reframes the entire session.
Scripture Every Morning, No Matter What
Some mornings George skips the full AM Briefing. He never skips the verse:
“I do want to do morning scripture no matter what. Philippians 2:3… do nothing out of rivalry or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourself.”
Why put scripture on the same footing as chart prep? Because preparation covers more than levels and news drivers. It covers you:
“Am I spiritually ready? You know, am I ready to be a good steward of the time, talent, and resources that’s been given to me?”
His method runs one verse per week rather than a new verse per day… fifty-two scriptures memorized in a year. He sets the week’s verse as his phone screensaver, so every glance at the phone repeats the lesson. As he puts it, “repetition stays in your mind better” (May 2, 2025). Traders drill setups the exact same way.
